Shire Brook Valley Heritage Group

I’m the current chairman of the SBV Heritage Group and we’ve been on the go since 2005.

The Shire Brook Valley or SBV for short is on the southeastern edge of Sheffield. And the Shire Brook was the county boundary between Yorkshire and Derbyshire until 1967. Its an historic kingdom boundary – Northumbria and Mercia- and ecclesiastical boundary – Canterbury and York – but you would never guess from walking through there.

The Heritage Group holds regular open afternoons at the Visitor Centre on Stone Lane,  Woodhouse,  Sheffield. Our first in 2014, should have been  on Sunday 23rd March but when I arrived to open up the security lock to open the shutters had been stolen!!

However, the lock is being replaced and our next open afternoon will be on 27th April (1 to 3.30pm) with a short walk at 2pm, displays and refreshments. This will be followed by a Bluebell walk around Birley Spa Wood on 21st May starting at 6.30pm (meet at footpath entrance on Dyke Vale Road) and an open afternoon and plant sale at the visitor centre on 1st June. These three events will be part of Sheffield’s Environment Weeks.

Further summer open afternoons will take place on 29th June, 27th July and 31st August, all from 1pm with short guided walks at 2pm.
